Preventology at the EQUILIBRIUM ‘young doctor’ school for children

Abstract

Smooth immersion of schoolchildren into the medical profession is a key aspect of preventology. Within the framework of the Biochemistry Student Scientific Society (the BSSS) of the Department of Fundamental and Clinical Biochemistry of Kuban State Medical University, the Equilibrium propaedeutic school for future doctors was organized in the city of Krasnodar for schoolchildren of grades 5–9. One of the methods of preventology for schoolchildren interested in medicine is to visit medical universities. There they not only learn about various specialties in medicine, communicate with doctors and students, but also receive initial skills from mentors who already have a secondary vocational medical education (such specialties as ‘dental hygienist’, ‘nurse’ and ‘dental technician’). Such skills will help schoolchildren to be successful in the first years of university study. Mentors familiarize schoolchildren with university departments and dental anatomy, communication, etc. In addition, the BSSS conducts excursions and classes at various departments of the medical university in order to promote preventology in medicine. Schoolchildren of the Equilibrium school have already visited the departments of anatomy, pharmacology, biochemistry and dentistry, where they learned about the human anatomy, studied the skeleton of the head, torso, limbs and their girdles, became acquainted with various types of medicines and recipe writing rules, studied the structure of the atom and chemical substances, and learned the basics of tooth preparation with subsequent restoration using a composite. After visiting the departments, the schoolchildren took online testing on the completed classes and showed good results, which indicates their high motivation. Visiting the departments helped the schoolchildren learn more about the many areas in medicine, which will make it easier for them to study at the university in the future.
